Stone fireplace surround

Fireplace Tile Installation: Create a Focal Point

A tiled fireplace surround can bring a room together. Whether you prefer a quiet stone look or a stronger pattern, the first step is understanding the existing fireplace and the area you want to change.

Show us the whole fireplace

Send a full-room photo and closer views of the surround, hearth and mantel. Explain whether you want to keep the current shape or change the finished appearance. Existing finishes and the condition beneath them affect preparation.

Check the fireplace requirements

The fireplace manufacturer’s requirements and applicable clearances must guide material placement around the unit. Tile selection alone does not establish that an assembly is suitable for heat. The installation plan needs to account for the actual fireplace and its surrounding construction.

Decide where the tile ends

Mantel edges, outside corners, hearth edges and adjoining walls all need a clear finish. Discuss the trim or edge treatment and how the tile pattern will be centered. These decisions can make a simple material feel carefully considered.

Bring a reference, not just a color

A photo of a fireplace you like helps communicate scale, layout and mood. Combine it with pictures of your own space and your location in the Chicago suburbs. We can then discuss the installation scope and what is needed for a quote.

Make the fireplace a deliberate focal point

Before selecting a surround, note the fireplace model, existing finish, mantel and hearth arrangement. Heat exposure and required clearances depend on the appliance and construction. Tile choices and installation details should be checked against the applicable manufacturer instructions for the specific fireplace.

Discuss where the cladding will stop and how corners, edges and the transition to the wall will look. A symmetrical layout can draw attention to the opening, while a larger format may create a quieter appearance. Read about our fireplace tile service and view a real surround in our project gallery.

A useful checklist before requesting an estimate

  • List the surfaces you want tiled and anything that must stay.
  • Share your town, approximate dimensions and preferred timing.
  • Include tile dimensions or product links if materials have been selected.
  • Identify any cabinet, countertop, plumbing or other work that needs coordination.
  • Ask what preparation and finishing details are included in the proposed scope.
